Berlin withdraws Nord Stream from the new EU Gas Directive

German authorities decide to release Nord Stream from the norms of the EU Gas Directive. This means that the pipeline coming from Russia will continue to operate at full capacity. And the EU directive suggested that the pipe should be only half full with Russian gas.

Now, as decided in Berlin, EU rules will not apply to Nord Stream for the next 20 years. But the fate of Nord Stream-2 has not yet been decided, the channel notes “Russia 24”. On May 20, 2020, an EU court dismissed the lawsuit of the operators of both pipelines, which demanded that the EU Gas Directive not be applied to itself.

The German government directive begins on December 12, 2019. It is noted that the Nord Stream AG gas pipeline contributed to security of supply and did not harm competition in the European domestic gas market.

The Nord Stream has a length of 1224 kilometers. Its capacity is 55 billion cubic meters per year. The gas pipeline was commissioned in November 2011. Over 345 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped through the pipeline.
