German intelligence could have known about the preparation of the PMC Wagner rebellion against the Kremlin in advance, about a week before it happened.
The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) could get access to the conversations of the leader of the Wagner PMC group Yevgeny Prigozhin and the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during the uprising in Russia at the end of June. German intelligence may also have had advance knowledge of the planned mutiny. On Friday, July 7, writes Tagesschau with reference to the data of journalists from radio stations WDR and NDR.
It is reported that the German side tried to verify this information by contacting representatives of other Western countries.
“German intelligence tried to verify this information through its partners, but at first it was unsuccessful,” the journalists say.
“And on June 24, when the Wagnerites were going to take Moscow, German intelligence monitored the communication between Prigozhin and Lukashenka,” the message says.
Lukashenko has negotiated appropriate security guarantees for Prigozhin if he stops the coup attempt. As a result, Prigozhin stopped the rebellion and had to go to Belarus in exchange for no punishment.
Intelligence declined to comment on this issue.
Earlier it was reported that PMC Wagner continues to recruit militants throughout Russia for the war in Ukraine. This is happening despite the recent unsuccessful attempt at a rebellion by Yevgeny Prigozhin, who owns this PMC.
