Berlin – At its annual general meeting, the Berlin State Sports Association unanimously approved the Berlin Sports Declaration on a bid for the 2036 and 2040 Olympics in Germany. 220 yes votes and four votes against demonstrated the broad support for a national application with Berlin participation.
“We want an application that is supported by the population. We want a sustainable application and we also want to see the values of sport transported. This also includes inclusive and attractive sports facilities for school and recreational sports, the necessary staff and offers that reach people in their living environments,” said LSB President Thomas Härtel on Friday.
Last week, Berlin signed an agreement – a so-called memorandum of understanding – with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). The capital is therefore ready to host the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Germany together with other cities.
DOSB President Thomas Weikert welcomed the Berlin sports decision. “The Special Olympics World Games made us want more. This will support a possible application. In Berlin, the LSB and its clubs and associations succeed in promoting sport for the entire population of Berlin in an exemplary manner,” said the sports official.
