Against the background of the impending energy crisis, several public buildings and landmarks in Berlin are no longer to be illuminated for the time being. «In view of the war against Ukraine and the energy policy threats from Russia, it is important that we use our energy as carefully as possible. That also and especially applies to the public sector, »said Senator for the Environment Bettina Jarasch (Greens) on Wednesday, according to the announcement.
The Victory Column, the Berlin Cathedral, the Memorial Church, the Red Town Hall and Charlottenburg Palace are among the 200 buildings that fall under the responsibility of this Senate administration and are then no longer illuminated at night. The lighting should not be switched off immediately everywhere, but gradually. Three to four weeks are planned for this.
Around 1400 spotlights are in operation for the lighting. The electricity costs amounted to around 40,000 euros per year. The buildings that are to be switched off in the course of Wednesday and are therefore no longer to be illuminated after dark include the cathedral, St. Mary’s Church, the Old Palace or the equestrian statue on Unter den Linden.
