Russia has declared the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), which is close to the CDU, an undesirable organization. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office announced this on Telegram on Monday.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that the KAS was distributing “material that discredits the leadership of the Russian Federation, its domestic and foreign policy, the work of law enforcement agencies and the judicial system.” In addition, the foundation was “actively promoting the policies of unfriendly states on the topic of special military operations” in Ukraine.
Shortly after the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine at the end of February 2022, Moscow closed the offices of several well-known international organizations, including offices of German party foundations.

KAS: “Russian regime wants to intimidate citizens”
“We stopped our work in Russia immediately after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and since then, like all other German political foundations, we no longer have a presence in Russia,” a KAS spokesman explained when asked by AFP in Berlin.
Over the past two years, more and more international organizations and German foundations have been added to the list of so-called undesirable organizations in Russia. “The goal is clear and internal: the Russian regime is increasing its repression, it wants to intimidate its own citizens and isolate them from liberal and democratic ideas,” the spokesman explained.
The KAS opened offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 1990 after the end of the Cold War. One of the foundation’s goals is to promote democracy. In March, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, which is close to the SPD, was also declared an undesirable organization in Russia.
