Late on Tuesday evening, a major fire broke out near Kurt-Schumacher-Platz. Residents were warned of heavy smoke. The following day, there was increasing evidence pointing to arson as the cause.
Following the fire on a company site in Berlin-Reinickendorf, the police are investigating on suspicion of arson. According to a statement on Wednesday, a witness noticed a fire in a caravan that was parked on the site in Meteorstrasse late on Tuesday evening. The flames then spread to three other caravans and two warehouses.
In addition to cars, the halls also contained gas cylinders, some of which exploded. In total, the fire covered around 2,000 square meters. The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading to two adjacent single-family homes. The fire was extinguished early on Wednesday morning.
The total of 125 emergency services had to fight the fire from the outside, as the roof of one of the halls had also partially collapsed. Neighboring buildings were evacuated as a precaution. No one was injured.
Because of the heavy smoke, residents were warned via warning apps late on Tuesday evening. The warning was then lifted again during the night.
