The first number one rap
With the song “Rapture” in March 1981, Blondie became the first band to make a rap number one in the US charts. A few weeks earlier, Debbie Harry had replaced the group The Funky Four Plus One More in her appearance on the TV show “Saturday Night Live”. Appearance considered the first rap act on US television.
Blonde for decades
For Debbie Harry, the permanent color also affects the hair material. At “InStyle” she suggests keeping some of the dark roots: “If you don’t let the color come into contact with the skin, it gives more strength to the hair. But it might still break, whatever.”
Playboy – Bunny
Before Blondie, Debbie Harry – then still with darker hair – worked as a waitress at New York’s Playboy Club. She later describes working as “Bunny” as “an interesting experience”. Unlike some colleagues, she did not want to be a “career bunny,” she said in an interview.
Debbie-Barbie
Decades after being launched in the music clubs of New York, Blondie’s front woman finally reached the mainstream of American children’s rooms: in 2009, the Debbie Harry Barbie doll conquered the market. To her great joy, as she confirmed.
Death escaped
The whole Blondie project almost came to nothing. In the early 1970s – before she even started as a musician – Debbie Harry said that she was almost a victim of the famous serial killer Ted Bundy, who pulled into his car. She was able to open the car door and free herself.
But: “Blondie is a band!” The musicians even had badges printed on them to clear up the misconception that the name only refers to frontwoman Deborah Harry. In fact, on the streets of New York, you’ll hear “Hey, Blondie!” they were shouted after, which became the inspiration for the band’s name, she said.
