Nowhere is the proportion of those who remain seated in general education schools as low in a nationwide comparison as in Berlin.
As the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday (February 2nd, 2021), around 3,200 boys and girls in the federal capital were not transferred to the higher grade level in the summer of 2019 or voluntarily decided to repeat. This corresponded to a share of 1.1 percent. In 2008 the rate was 3.6. Nationwide, around 143,600 pupils repeated the grade in the past school year. According to the information, the share was 2.3 percent. The proportion of repeaters is declining, it said. 20 years ago in 1999 it was 2.8 percent.

Effects of the corona pandemic on positive trend not yet apparent
The Federal Office said it was not yet known what effects the corona pandemic will have on the positive trend. In the past year, the federal states have come up with different regulations on relocation. In the 2019/2020 school year, 60 percent of repeaters were male. According to the information, the highest proportion of them was in Bavaria with 3.8 percent, the lowest in Berlin with 1.1 percent. Nationwide, around 8.3 million children and young people attended general education schools in the 2019/2020 school year.
