According to Visit Berlin, the ad is part of a larger campaign and should remind everyone to follow the corona rules in the city. “Most Berlin residents and visitors respect the rules, but some don’t. They risk the lives of older people and others vulnerable to the virus, ”spokesman Christian Tänzler said in some British media. “We wanted to draw attention to that. That’s why we opted for a provocative message. ”
Visit Berlin further insists that Berlin residents are known for their direct communication and their image of outsiders, also known as the ‘Berliner Schnauze’.
‘Complete failure’
Not everyone is convinced. The fact that the city council is behind the campaign arouses resentment. “The Senate apparently thinks insulting people is a more interesting strategy than strict and clear rules that are properly monitored,” said the Berlin newspaper’s chief editor The daily mirror, calling the ad “a complete failure.”
The opposition in Berlin – including Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU – calls the situation “too serious for stupid jokes”. The government in the city consists of a coalition of social democrats (SPD), socialists (Die Linke) and greens.
Visit Berlin has already announced that it does not intend to use the campaign image again. The daily mirror notes delicately that it seems to have achieved its goal anyway.
