The Bulgarians must be included in the constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia and this is the last step to open the first negotiating cluster with the European Union. This was stated by the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Analena Berbock, at her meeting today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of the RSM, Timcho Mutsunski, in Berlin, Deutsche Welle reported on its website.

According to the edition of the press conference after the meeting with Mutsunski, Berbok spoke about changes to the country’s constitution as a key step towards the start of North Macedonia’s negotiations with the EU, although she emphasized that she was in favor of abolishing the principle of unanimity in the EU, especially regarding the expansion. According to her, the rules in the EU are that decisions are taken unanimously, and until these rules are changed, what she is advocating is that they should be followed.

“We know how difficult it is to make constitutional changes in democracies and I requested this during my last visit to North Macedonia. But at that time (in the country) there was an election campaign and I realized that this step was not possible then. Now there are elections in Bulgaria and after that there will be an opportunity that should be used jointly,” said Berbok, quoted by Deutsche Welle.

In the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of North Macedonia about the meeting held between the two foreign ministers, it is said that the focus of the talks were “the excellent political and economic relations between the two countries and the strong partnership over the last 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Germany’s support on the country’s path to European integration, as well as other current topics in the field of regional and European security”.

“At the meeting and during the press conference, Minister Mutsunski expressed his conviction that the unblocking of the European integration process by holding the second intergovernmental conference and the immediate start of negotiations will not only strengthen the European agenda for reforms in the region, but will also make it very more resistant to influences from third countries, stressing that the unblocking of our European integration process is a matter of strategic interest both for the security of the region and for the permanent commitments of the EU”, the announcement reads.

Emphasizing the strong support from Germany and the fact that the government of North Macedonia is making progress in the reform process, Berbok also pointed to the importance of judicial reform, the fight against corruption and strengthening the rule of law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Skopje.
