Berlin demands legal basis for new rent limit – Berlin.de

The House of Representatives is once again looking for ways to counter rising rents and purchase prices in Berlin today (10:00 a.m.). After the end of the rent cap, the coalition factions of the SPD, the Left and the Greens in the state parliament are campaigning for a legal basis for a new edition.

The Berlin Senate should therefore work in the Federal Council to ensure that states and municipalities are allowed to limit rents – this competence was missing in the rent cap, as the Federal Constitutional Court found. It declared the Berlin law null and void. Thousands of tenants have to pay back rent.

The agenda also includes improved opportunities to track down landlords who are illegally renting holiday homes. To this end, Red-Red-Green wants to change the law on the prohibition of misuse and the tax code.

In the current hour, the MPs want to discuss how the Berlin economy can get going again after the Corona crisis. Another topic will be how to deal with the squatted house at 94 Rigaer Strasse.
