Berlin Court Sentences Climate Activist to Prison for Street Blockades: ‘Last Generation’ Faces Harshest Penalty Yet

“That’s why we must do everything we can to ensure that the police and the judiciary work hand in hand and show that the rule of law is serious. We will make sure of that,” Wegner promises. The mayor of Berlin has been particularly critical of the activists of the radical climate activist organization “Letzte Generation” (“The Last Generation”), who painted the Berlin Brandenburg Gate with orange paint on Sunday.

The “last generation” has gained recognition for provocative protests, including hugging famous works of art in museums and sticking to street pavements. The organization has started a new wave of protests in Berlin this week.

Speaking to parliament today, Wegner said attacking and retaliating against climate activists was not the right answer. “We must remain calm,” he stressed, adding that all crimes must be punished.

Meanwhile, the Berlin court on Wednesday sentenced a 41-year-old activist of the “Last Generation” organization to eight months in prison for blocking the streets.

The “Last Generation” said that this is the harshest sentence handed down to its activists.

The court stated that the woman participated in three street blockades in Berlin between October 10 and October 19, 2022. In two cases, she stuck to the street surface.

She was initially fined for coercion, attempted coercion and resisting law enforcement officers. After she appealed, the case went to court.

The court sentenced the woman to prison after she declared in court that she would continue to participate in the protests. The court also ruled that a suspended sentence cannot be imposed on her.
