Berlin becomes a hub for refugees

The main train station in the German capital has become the western hub for war refugees. Administration and helpers can still cope with the onslaught. But among the police, many are concerned. “Half of the Balkans arrive here,” says an official.

The train from Warsaw is several hours late, as are all trains from the Polish capital currently arriving in Berlin. Philipp Mauritz is standing at the platform to pick up refugees from the Ukraine and take them in. The 52-year-old lives with his wife and two children in a two-room apartment in the Prenzlauer Berg district, and he also has a one-room apartment. He would like to leave this to the Ukrainians. He already knows who, he says. A friend put me in touch.
