‘Berlin Airport can finally open after years of delay’

The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport has overcome an important hurdle to open at the end of October. German media report that the authorities have issued the necessary security permits for the opening to take place on October 31.

The airport, which should replace the airports Berlin Tempelhof, Tegel and Schönefeld, should have opened nine years ago. This has been postponed several times due to mismanagement and technical problems. There were mainly concerns about fire safety. The postponement has cost billions of euros extra.

Now that the German authorities are convinced that the main safety requirements have been met, the airport will finally be able to receive passengers later this year. Volunteers are expected to test all processes in the terminal in June and July, from checking in at the counter to boarding the plane.

Corona crisis

Meanwhile, the current airports in Berlin, like the rest of the world, are facing the consequences of the corona crisis. Only a fraction of the normal number of passengers flies. The new Berlin Brandenburg airport will therefore probably also be dependent on additional government subsidies for the time being.
