Silver medalist in the decathlon Leo Neugebauer is coming to Berlin after his successful Olympic appearance. As the organizers of the ISTAF announced, a triathlon will now be added to the program for the traditional competition day in the capital on September 1st.

The 24-year-old will then compete against former world and European champion Niklas Kaul and other decathletes in the 100 metres, discus throw and 1,500 metres at the Olympic Stadium.

Joy about the restructuring of the ISTAF program

“I have been following the ISTAF for a long time and have heard so many positive things from the others in the team. Now we decathletes are starting together in the ISTAF triathlon – how cool,” Neugebauer was quoted as saying in an ISTAF statement on Sunday.

After a long lead, Neugebauer finished the competition in the Stade de France on Saturday in second place behind the Norwegian Markus Rooth and won the first German Olympic medal in the decathlon in 28 years. Kaul came in eighth. Numerous German athletics stars, such as long jumper Malaika Mihambo and sprinter Gina Lückenkemper, have confirmed their participation in the Istaf.

Special rule in the three-way competition

In the final run, Neugebauer, Kaul and Co. start according to the so-called Gundersen method, so that the winner of the run is also the winner of the ISTAF triathlon and does not have to be calculated after the race.

The athletes start with a gap calculated according to the points score. The athlete in the lead after two disciplines in the ISTAF triathlon starts first.
