And after an investigation launched by the law firm Alston & Board in January after it came to light about a 1991 incident involving Berhalter who kicked his future wife, Rosalind, while they were dating during college.
Berhalter acknowledged the “shameful” incident and the investigation concluded that he had not committed any further acts of violence.
“Given the investigators’ conclusion that there is no legal impediment to his employment, Greg Berhalter remains a candidate for the position of head coach of the men’s national team,” the American Federation said in a statement.
Berhalter led the US national team to what is considered a successful participation in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year, after bringing it to the final price round.
However, a sharp dispute with Borussia Dortmund striker Giovanni Reina cast a shadow over the national team and disturbed the achievement of reaching the final price.
Coach Brenna, widely regarded as one of the most gifted young players in American football, was of little help in Qatar, where the team’s career ended at the hands of the Netherlands.
The 20-year-old’s limited participation was the source of much speculation, with Berhalter suggesting Reina was not fit enough physically, a claim the player disputed.
And American reports revealed that the player almost left the camp because of his behavior during training, but he was allowed to stay in the team after he was forced to apologize to his colleagues.
It is believed that the Reina family was behind the 1991 case in retaliation against Berhalter, who was a teammate of Claudio Reina, Giovanni’s father, in the national team.
Berhalter’s contract with the US national team expired on December 31, so he left the task of supervising the preparatory camp that took place in January to his assistant in the Qatar World Cup, Anthony Hudson.
But making the decision regarding Berhalter’s return to coaching the national team is linked to the appointment of a new sports director to succeed Ernie Stewart, who left the position in February, according to the American Federation.
He explained in his statement on Monday that the process of “determining who will be the sports director is ongoing, and interviews are ongoing,” adding, “The sports director will lead the process of determining who will work as a coach for the men’s national team.”
The federation also noted that the report “identifies the need to review the NFL’s policies regarding appropriate family behavior and communication with employees at the national team level.”
“We will update those policies as we continue to work to ensure a safe environment for everyone involved in our game,” he said.
