The Bergkamen Municipal High School is taking part in a NRW competition for cultural education. They design their own music video and song.
Bergkamen – The NRW Prize “Cultural Education” is aimed at cultural, educational and youth institutions that are particularly committed to the goal of making cultural education accessible and attractive for all children and young people. The focus is on building sustainable structures through networking and cooperation.
At the Bergkamen Municipal High School (SGB), cultural education is an important part of school life thanks to the musical focus and the established cooperation with the music school. In addition, the school maintains good relationships with the city library and the city museum. In order to combine these individual collaborations under one roof, it was suggested to further expand and strengthen the work with the cultural department of the city of Bergkamen and to apply for the NRW “Cultural Education” prize with this approach.
SGB: With a music video for the NRW competition
The core of the application is a song and a specially produced music video. The idea came from the project management. “What could be better than letting the students themselves explain what the cultural educational offerings mean to them?” says Gereon Kleinhubbert, head of the youth art school. He advised school principal Dr. Mirja Sache on how the contribution for the project prize could best be designed. “I was very grateful for his support because he doesn’t bring a school perspective, but rather an artistic one,” continued Sache. As a result, organizational arrangements were made. Kleinhubbert put us in touch with two students from Folkwang University – Yassin Adoptante and Tim Schmiedner – who helped the students write and perform the lyrics. The result was recorded and will be part of a music video, the visual recordings of which were taken at the municipal high school.

The different areas of cultural education should be examined one after the other. The aim is to create recordings of a reading break in the library, the creation of works of art in class, the culture café, the choir, the school orchestra, the theater group and the creative writing literature course. The students will come to the school and take professional photographs of the students’ activities. The students who are performing the text should also be brought into the picture.
Some areas are filmed by the school itself
Two areas – namely the school garden and the political-historical cultural education – will also be on display, but the photos will be taken by the school itself. Adopters and blacksmiths don’t see this as a problem, as they have to cut and process the material afterwards anyway. In order to make the project feasible, not only was advice and help in recruiting suitable experts essential, but financing could also only be achieved by pooling financial resources from the youth art school and the high school.
A new work of art was also recently unveiled at the SGB. It shows a giant Pegasus.
