In addition to great family drama, “Der Bergdoktor” is now also about to say goodbye. because dr Martin Gruber wants to leave his homeland. He is planning a trip to New York – where Franziska lives.
Ellmau – What were the times when “Der Bergdoktor” was idyllic and peaceful and the series characters stood by each other lovingly and loyally. In the meantime, the mood in the popular ZDF series has changed drastically and the family well-being of the Grubers around the protagonist Martin (Hans Sigl, 53) and Mama Lisbeth (Monika Baumgartner, 71) is about to end. As season 16 draws to a close, it seems like everything could change in the cult homeland series – and the long-awaited happy ending for the Grubers is a long way off in the seventh episode “Neuland”.
“Distance is good for you”: Franziska wants Bergdoktor Martin Gruber to go to New York
In addition to the puzzling patient cases that Dr. Martin Gruber and his colleagues are struggling, the focus of the current “Bergdoktor” season is primarily on his maltreated private life. After Martin confessed to his brother Hans (Heiko Ruprecht, 50) that he had a secret relationship with his deceased wife Sonja, the house blessing went awry – and the likeable country doctor was banned from the Gruberhof. Hans blocks all attempts to apologize and the reconciliation of the two brothers seems impossible.
BEWARE, SPOILERS: The endless family drama weighs heavily on Martin Gruber, and to ease the burden he calls Franziska (Simone Hanselmann, 43) – the mother of his son Johann, who moved to New York at the end of last season. His ex-wife has built a new life for herself in the glittering east coast metropolis and has a promising proposal for him: “How about you come visit us for a few days? I thought maybe the distance would be good for you and you would think differently.”
A change of scenery after the explosive arguments with his younger brother could be just the right thing for Martin – and so he accepts Franziska’s offer without hesitation: a week in the USA – thousands of miles away from all trouble and work stress. While mountain doctor mother Lisbeth fears losing her sons, distance seems to be the only way out for Martin.
Hans Sigl’s secret guest role in “Der Bergdoktor”
Since 2008, Hans Sigl has embodied the title hero Martin Gruber in “Der Bergdoktor”. The exciting life of the country doctor inspires millions of loyal fans with every episode and has made his actor one of the biggest stars of German television. But what very few people know: the role as the son of Lisbeth Gruber is not Hans Sigl’s first Bergdoktor appearance. Because ten years before he slipped into the white doctor’s coat, he was already seen as a taxi driver in the popular series that was still running on Sat.1 at the time and in which Gerhard Lippert, a completely different mountain doctor, was the focus. Who knows – maybe an extra from the ZDF remake will one day succeed Hans Sigl?

No reconciliation in sight: Bergdoktor Martin Gruber moves to New York after a family drama
BEWARE, SPOILERS: The fact that the situation has escalated to such an extent that his brother is closing the practice and wants to go to New York should actually be a wake-up call for Hans – but he is more cold than ever. “It’s a start, it would be better if he stayed there,” he railed in front of his mother and his girlfriend Linn. “And because Martin betrayed you, should the whole Gruber family break up now?” Linn shoots back, “Is that really what you want, Hans?”
But the man of her heart won’t be talked to, seems to have thrown all reason overboard and makes a drastic demand: Linn, who works in Martin’s practice, should look for a new job. “Now it’s getting completely absurd,” she says angrily, and Lisbeth agrees: “He’s crazy.”
The fact that Hans wants to intervene in his professional life drives Martin mad and he confronts his brother – but the conversation between the two gets completely out of hand again. “You took my whole life, you, and now you’re finally leaving,” Hans yells at him, while Lisbeth can only watch with tears streaming down as their children’s relationship finally breaks up. Martin drives away without a word and finally calls Franziska again: “I don’t need the guest room. I’ll take a small apartment, Franziska. I may stay longer. A lot longer.”

Hans has done a lot of damage with his words – and it remains to be seen whether Martin’s move to New York will mean the end for the Gruber brothers. On February 23, ZDF will show the eighth and final episode “Der Weg zurück” and the Bergdoktor season finale already promises to be extremely dramatic.
