Former Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov says Harry Kane is facing the same situation this summer as he did in 2008.
Kane he has become one of the world’s most lethal and consistent forwards in his various seasons with the Spurs. He has scored 164 Premier League goals and could well surpass Alan Shearer’s record of 260 if he continues. However, he has reached an important career crossroads as he approaches his 28th birthday.
Although he is nearing the peak of his powers, he has yet to win any major trophies.
While he has remained loyal to Tottenham amid near misses with the Champions League and Premier League, this summer could present new challenges; Will reportedly seek to leave if Spurs don’t qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The Spurs sit in sixth place and face a battle to finish in the top four. However, they can end the campaign with a trophy by beating Manchester City in the EFL Cup final on Sunday.
As such, you face a situation similar to Berbatov, who won the same competition with Spurs in 2008, the club’s last silver medal, before opting to move to Manchester United.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Berbatov insisted that he sees a mirror image in Kane’s situation. He added that there could be a dramatic change in the cards if Kane picks up a winner’s medal at Wembley.
“I was thinking about my own success, about my personal path in football because I, coming from a small country, always wanted my whole career to play for a club like [Paolo] Maldini, like [Ryan] Giggs, ”said the Bulgarian.
“But it was never going to happen to me because I come from Bulgaria, so ending up in England and then pursuing my dream was a dream come true for me.
“And then when you hear that one of the biggest clubs loves you after having tasted success of winning a trophy, let me tell you something, things change drastically. Because you think, ‘this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win more, so I’m not going to miss it.’
“I knew I would disappoint some people, some people would get mad, but in the end, this is my own path, my own success story, so I needed to write it my way.
“That’s why I made that decision and we’ll probably see it happen again soon because Harry Kane is now in my position where he was before. It is difficult, stressful, many questions in the head, but in the end I needed to write my own history in football.
Berbatov made headlines by moving across England on the day of the transfer deadline in the summer of 2008.
After a long transfer saga in which Manchester City nearly hijacked the deal, the forward moved to Old Trafford.
Update on Kane’s injury before the final
Even though Kane could pick up a winner’s medal on Sunday, he may not play a role in the final.
He did not practice Friday, and interim head coach Ryan Mason insisted he will take the situation “hour after hour.”
Spurs He faced a similar situation for the 2019 Champions League final, with Kane finally starting against Liverpool, but to no great effect.
