Real Madrid were able to rely on Karim Benzema again on Saturday. The 33-year-old Frenchman scored two goals (20th, 30th) in the 3-1 (2-1) of the Madrilenians away against Celta Vigo and enabled the champions to reduce the gap to leaders Atletico Madrid to three points. The city rival is on Sunday against Alaves. The third-placed FC Barcelona will then be in action at Real Sociedad at the end of the round in the evening.
Benzema has now always scored in six games in a row. Even the short break due to adductor problems did not stop his run. Since his return two weeks ago, he has been involved in every Real Madrid goal in the championship. In Vigo he prepared the 3-1 for Marco Asensio in stoppage time. For Celta, Santi Mina (40th) shortened just before the break.
Drone interrupts Bilbao
A drone with a message against the European Championship games in Bilbao had previously caused a short-term interruption in the game between Athletic Bilbao and Eibar (1: 1). The match was stopped in the 68th minute while the referee carried the flying object with the flag attached from the field.
Bilbao is planned as one of twelve venues in twelve countries for the EM (June 11 to July 11), which has been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Spanish national team will play all of its three group matches there, making it the first time since 1967 in the Basque Country.
The disruptive action is attributed to separatist groups that want to prevent Spain from competing in the Basque Country. In Bilbao, however, resistance to the organization of European Championship games has recently increased due to the danger posed by the corona virus.
