The British Football Association has suspended the Tottenham midfielder for seven matches Rodrigo Bentancur for the racist words directed at his South Korean teammate Son Heung-min during an interview on Uruguayan TV. The sentence for which he was disqualified dates back to last June when Bentancur, speaking of Son, jokingly said: “Sonny? He could also be his cousin, since they all look the same”. A joke that immediately triggered disciplinary proceedings against him by the federation, which ended with today’s disqualification.
Fine and educational program for Bentancur
Bentancur, who was also fined 100,000 pounds (around 120,000 euros), will also have to take part in a mandatory in-person educational program. “Rodrigo Bentancur denied the allegation, but the independent regulatory commission found it proven and imposed sanctions on him after a hearing,” the FA said in a statement.
He will be able to play in the Europa League
The 27-year-old Uruguayan midfielder will not return to action in England before December 26, missing, among others, the Premier League matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, and Spurs’ League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United. He will be available for Tottenham’s Europa League matches.
