Also on Wednesday evening (March 24th, 2021) a car burned again in the city, again the officials assume arson. Further information about the incident is not yet known, but the police are investigating a connection to the other car fires in recent weeks.

Update from Thursday, March 18, 2021, 7:04 a.m .: The series of burning cars in Bensheim near Darmstadt continues. On Wednesday (March 17th, 2021) two more cars were reported that were on fire. The police assume that the acts, which were discovered between 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., were arson. Numerous emergency services are currently on duty to find possible arsonists, reports the police. Among other things, a helicopter supports the search. The Bensheim police at 06251-84680 or the emergency call center at 110 receive information about suspicious people from the population.

Large-scale operation: police use a helicopter to search and arrest 40 young people

First report from Saturday, February 20th, 2021: Bensheim – In Bensheim near Darmstadt, several cars went up in flames on Friday afternoon (February 19, 2021). The police were looking for the arsonists with a large contingent – around 40 people were arrested by the evening.

At 4:30 p.m. a burning Mini-Cooper was reported in the Schönberg district of Bensheim. The car was parked in the SV Schönberg parking lot. A little later the police received reports of another burning car in Nibelungenstrasse, this time a Renault Scenic. At around 5:40 p.m., an Opel Corsa also burned down on Wilhelmstrasse.

Witnesses told the police that a large group of youths were walking in the area. The police used several patrol cars to search for the alleged perpetrators, and a helicopter probed the area from the air. With the help of numerous clues from local residents, two groups of people were found: 40 people were arrested, including four children. After the minors were identified, they could be taken to their parents. The remaining suspects were gradually released after verifying their personal details.

It is currently being checked whether the suspects were involved in the arson near Darmstadt for between 13 and 20 years. The police have not yet provided any information about the damage caused.
