The development of the webcam has stagnated a bit. The resolution is increasing, the sound is improving, integrated covers have been added, but otherwise not much has happened in the last twenty years. That’s why it’s surprising that BenQ, which we know mostly thanks to monitors and projectors, has finally come up with something new. His ideaCam S1 it has several possible uses.
Of course, it will record you during a video call like any other. But BenQ also added a “desktop mode”. You tilt the camera downwards, so it records what you’re doing. And if you’re drawing something, it cleverly flips the image so that the other side sees the table “through your eyes”. Apple showed something similar last year in the cooperation of Macs and iPhones.
The camera can also be simply detached from the holder and then show things around you. And you can even put a magnifying glass (macro attachment) on it so that it can see even small objects clearly. There is also an LED light to make them more visible. The image should be good enough for the ideaCam to scan, for example, books or other printed documents and convert them into digital text.
BenQ deployed an 8MP sensor from Sony with an unconventional resolution of 3264 × 2448 px, a microphone with a noise-blocking function. In the Pro version, the camera also comes with a puck-shaped wireless remote control. The prices are no longer attractive. The standard Plus version costs $187 (CZK 5,000), while the Pro version with a puck costs $209 (CZK 5,500).
