MADRID, 3 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The leader of the opposition and member of Israel’s war cabinet, Benny Gantz, has advocated this Wednesday for calling early elections in Israel and has appealed to the unity of Israeli society after the massive demonstration against the Government last night in Jerusalem.
“Establishing that date will not only allow us to continue our military efforts, but will also show the citizens of Israel that they will soon be able to renew their trust in us,” he said, as reported by ‘The Times of Israel’.
Gantz has also assured that he has proposed this possibility to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “What Israel needs is tranquility at the polls and not flames in the streets,” he said, alluding to the massive protests that have taken place since Sunday.
«The strength of our Army and the spirit of our warriors are an important part of our ability to win the war. “Unity is the key to our future,” he emphasized this Wednesday in responses to the demonstrations.
«We cannot accept violence from anywhere. “We cannot accept that people ignore the instructions of the Police,” said Gantz, criticizing that some protesters ignored the restrictions imposed by the officers.
“The protest is legitimate, the pain is understandable, but we must respect the law and the rules (…) We must not return to October 6,” he stated, relating the tense atmosphere experienced in recent days in some Israeli cities with the unrest that was experienced during the days prior to the Hamas attack.
For his part, the director general of Israel’s internal intelligence agency –Shin Bet–, Ronen Bar, has also referred to last night’s protests to reproach the protesters for acting violently, also warning that it is already a “worrying trend.”
“The violent speech and some of the scenes we saw tonight in Jerusalem go beyond an acceptable protest, they damage the ability to maintain public order, they could lead to violent clashes with security forces,” Bar warned.
“There is a clear line between legitimate protest and violent and illegal protest,” warned the head of the internal Intelligence services.
Thousands of people marched this Tuesday towards the home of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Jerusalem, within the framework of the so-called “national week of protest” called by the opposition to call for early elections and which will likely end on Saturday, April 6 with a great demonstration.
