Bennett wins classic Eschborn-Frankfurt | Radio Lip

Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – The Irishman Sam Bennett has won the 61st edition of the Eschborn-Frankfurt cycling classic.

On May Day, the 31-year-old from the German Bora-hansgrohe team beat Colombian Fernando Gaviria and Norwegian Alexander Kristoff after 183.9 kilometers, securing his first victory at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main.

The German pros around John Degenkolb and Nils Politt went away empty-handed and were unable to repeat Pascal Ackermann’s last home win in 2019.

The traditional race took place for the first time in three years on the regular date on May 1st. In 2020 the corona pandemic caused a cancellation. In 2021 there was a corona-related postponement to autumn, at that time the race was held as a World Cup dress rehearsal. Sprinter Ackermann missed this time because of a fracture in his coccyx. Other top German pros weren’t there because they are already preparing for the Giro d’Italia, which starts on May 6th in Budapest.
