Bennett wins and buttons off Sagan’s green jersey

Sam Bennett won the stage 10 sprint ahead of Caleb Ewan and Peter Sagan. The Irishman is taking over the green jersey from Sagan as the best sprinter. André Greipel was in the top group, but missed the podium.

Bennett took the win on Tuesday after 168.5 kilometers from Le Château-d’Oléron to Saint-Martin-de-Ré, ahead of Caleb Ewan and Peter Sagan. The yellow jersey will be kept by the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who is still 21 seconds ahead of the Colombian defending champion Egan Bernal.

After Bennett had fulfilled his lifelong sporting dream, even the tough sprint star became soft. “Sorry, I really don’t want to be a crybaby now,” said the Irishman with a torrent of tears after his first stage win at the Tour de France: “But this has always been my goal.”

Recognition for Bennett and Greipel – Buchmann again loses time

You wait so many years to get this chance. It takes time to realize that. It’s such a relief, “said Bennett, who sprinted to fourth, second and third place in the first week of the tour. That Bennett celebrated his biggest coup against his old team after three Giro and two Vuelta stage wins, left satisfaction. Sagan said appreciatively, “Sam has shown that he can win a Tour stage. We’re only halfway through and there are still some chances to get the green jersey back. ”

Andre Greipel also received recognition: The veteran, who suffered so much in the first week of the Tour, sprinted for the first time and came in a strong sixth place. “It was a small ray of hope at the end of the tunnel after the difficult time before today’s stage. I’m glad that I was able to get back into the final,” said the 38-year-old.

On the other hand, Emanuel Buchmann lost more time. The Bora captain, who had been badly beaten in the Pyrenees, had declared his ambition for classification to be invalid on the day of rest.

All drivers negative – sprint probably also on Wednesday

Before the stage, it became known that all drivers had remained negative in the corona tests around the first day of rest. But there was a positive result from Tour Director Christian Prudhomme, who has to leave the race for at least a week. Four supervisors from the 22 teams also tested positive, but this had no consequences for the teams.

On Wednesday, the Tour of France continues with the eleventh stage over 167.5 kilometers from Châtelaillon-Plage to Poitiers. Apart from a mountain in the fourth category, there are no major difficulties so that there could be a mass sprint.
