TEL AVIV – Naftali Bennett, who on Sunday moved one step closer to replacing the Prime Minister (PM) Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, is a former technology entrepreneur. He is a billionaire who is well known in politics with hard-line far-right rhetoric.

The 49-year-old politician is listed as the leader of a political party, which calls for Israel to annex Palestinian parts of the West Bank.

Identical to his kippa and impeccable American accent English, he is very liberal in the economy and takes a hard line against Iran.

He shares this ideology with Netanyahu and has served in several governments led by the Likud Party, Netanyahu’s party, but in recent years the two camps have become increasingly at odds.

After 11 days of bloody fighting with Palestinian resistance groups in the Gaza Strip, Bennett finally agreed to join the centrist Yair Lapid in the coalition to oust Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has been in power for 12 consecutive years.

Lapid has offered to share power, letting Bennett be the rotating prime minister where Bennett is for the first turn.

In a speech late Sunday, Bennett claimed leftist parties would back him to lead a coalition government.

“The left is far from an easy compromise here, when it is given to me… the role of prime minister,” he was quoted as saying Times of Israel.

Lapid has until Wednesday evening to put together a 61-seat coalition in the 120-seat Israeli Knesset-Parliament.

Yamina, the religious-nationalist party won seven Knesset seats in the country’s last general election in March, although one of its members refused to join the anti-Netanyahu coalition.

Bennett is also a former special forces officer. He is listed as the son of American-born parents and lives with his wife Galit and four children in downtown Ra’anana.
