Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have “raged” at Canadian PM Justin Trudeau. Trudeau’s statement asking Israel to “exercise maximum restraint” regarding its war in Gaza, Palestine was the cause.
Trudeau emphasized that what Israel was doing had an impact on Palestinian civilians. He stressed that “the world is watching”.
“All innocent lives have the same value, both in Israel and in Palestine,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference in the province of British Columbia CNBC International, Wednesday (15/11/2023).
“I urge the Israeli government to exercise maximum restraint. [Karena] the world is watching, on TV, on social media,” he added.
“We listened to the testimonies of doctors, family members, survivors, children who lost their parents. The world is witnessing the murder of women, children and babies. This must stop,” he explained again.
Trudeau even made a separate post. He also mentioned French President Emmanuel Macron’s strong voice.
“French President Macron and I share deep concern over the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the scale of suffering of Palestinian civilians and the loss of civilian lives,” he stressed.
“We also call for the immediate release of those held hostage by Hamas,” he added.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu directed his message at Trudeau. He claimed it was not Israel that deliberately targeted civilians but Hamas.
“Who beheaded, burned and massacred civilians in the worst atrocities committed against Jews since the Holocaust,” he said.
“While Israel does everything to keep civilians from harm, Hamas does everything to keep them from harm,” he said.
“Israel provides a humanitarian corridor and safe zone for civilians in Gaza, Hamas prevents them from leaving at gunpoint. It is not Hamas, it is not Israel that must be held accountable for committing a double war crime, targeting civilians while hiding behind civilians,” he explained.
There has been no further response from Trudeau to these comments. Previously, he condemned the Hamas attack on October 7 and the increase in antisemitic demonstrations since Israel’s counterattack on the Gaza Strip.
It should be noted that the group called the Hamas attack itself a retaliation for the attack on the Al-Aqsa Mosque earlier in the year and the increasingly massive Jewish occupation of the area. The Israeli attack alone has claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people in Gaza.
