Benjamin mendy has just been transferred to Strangeways prison, one of the most stringent and has a long history in England — including one with death. Joey Barton and Reynhard Sinaga are alumni.
HM Prison Manchester. That’s the official name of the Strangeways prison in the city of Manchester, England. Familiar with Strangeways, referring to the location of the high-level prison.
Benjamin Mendy, a footballer who plays for Manchester City, is one of the new arrivals to the multi-layered prison that also has a gripping history.
Mendy has been arrested for being entangled in 7 cases of rape and one case of sexual harassment, with a total of five victims, which he committed in the 2020-2021 timeframe. Before Christmas 2021, reports about Mendy’s actions increased. There was one additional victim, which made the French player’s sentence even more difficult.
Since last August, Benjamin Mendy has been held at the HMP Altcourse prison in Liverpool. Now, the place where he spent his prison term was moved to Strangeways.
Strangeways itself is known as a prison inhabited by Category A prisoners aka prisoners who are considered very dangerous to the environment if they escape. So do not be surprised if the level of security is very high.
History of Strangeways Prison
Judging from its history, this prison began operating in 1868. Strangeways has also been the location of executions for convicts from 1869 to 1964. The Manchester Evening News puts the number exactly 100.
“On March 29, 1869, Michael Johnson became the first person to be hanged in Strangeways Prison,” read the local Manchester media.
Strangeways Prison also caused a stir in the mid-1990s, due to a series of riots involving prisoners. From April 1 to April 25 of that year, no less than 147 prison workers and 47 prisoners were injured as a result of the riots. Two people died; one from the prisoner and one from the prison worker due to a heart attack.

For the Indonesian public, the name Strangeways stole the attention after Reynhard Sinaga, an Indonesian citizen who became a sexual predator in the UK, was thrown into the prison. Reportedly, Reynhard looks very relaxed in living his days there. That’s why Reynhard Sinaga was later transferred to a more ‘haunted’ prison, namely Wakefield.
“Sinaga smirked around Strangeways and seemed to be starting to get comfortable. Now he has to keep himself among some of Britain’s most notorious criminals,” British publication The Sun quoted a source as saying.

Former footballer Joey Barton has also been a resident of Strangeways. Meanwhile, referee Anthony Taylor was able to save Christian Eriksen’s life thanks to his experience at Strangeways.
