From Boschet to the Champions League: Benjamin Glück, video analyst at RB under Julian Nagelsmann, talks about his career. From Ohlstadt it went via Hoffenheim to Leipzig.
It’s August 18, 2020. The floodlights are on in the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. Down on the lawn, the footballers from RB Leipzig and Paris St. Germain are warming up for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League – the largest and most important club competition in the world. World-class players like Neymar and Kylian Mbappé are part of the game. Spectators are not allowed due to the corona pandemic. Only the substitute players, the coaching staff and supervisors take their places in the stands. One of them: Benjamin Glück from Ohlstadt. The 34-year-old is a video analyst at RB Leipzig. “From Boschet () to the Champions League semi-finals, that was amazing,” Glück remembers that special day.
Benjamin Glück came to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ten years ago
The Ohlstadt native came into contact with professional football for the first time in 2011, completed an internship in various areas of the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim youth performance center – and left a lasting impression. After another internship, the Kraichgauer finally hired him. In 2013, at the TSG U19 team, luck met the man who was to have a lasting impact on his professional career: Julian Nagelsmann. The then 26-year-old A-youth coach is now considered one of the best coaches in Europe. Between the Bavarians – Nagelsmann was born in Landsberg – the chemistry was right immediately. “In terms of content, I learned an incredible amount from Julian. Outside of the job we were already very close. ”Together they became German A youth champions. In the following year they parted ways – for the time being.
Glück rose to the U23. A year later, he was promoted to the Bundesliga team. In terms of sport, however, the TSG season did not go as expected, the team played against relegation. Neither under Markus Gisdol nor under Huub Steevens the required results were achieved. In February 2016, the association finally decided to take an extraordinary, because courageous, step and installed the only 28-year-old Nagelsmann as the new trainer. The two friends were reunited. After relegation, they qualified for the Champions League the following year.
In 2019, Glück moved to RB with Nagelsmann in Leipzig
In 2019, Nagelsmann moved to Leipzig and took Glück with him as a video analyst. The common path culminated so far in reaching the Champions League semi-final against Paris, which was lost 3-0. If the Ohlstädter has his way, that shouldn’t have been the highlight yet. “It would be the greatest if we win a title at some point.” The best chance of this could come from the DFB Cup this year, Leipzig will meet Werder Bremen in the semi-finals.
Happiness travels a lot in his job and spends more time with Nagelsmann than with his girlfriend and their child. It is all the more important for the 34-year-old that the relationship with the head coach is so good. “I’m in the Bundesliga with one of my best friends.” But what exactly does happiness do during a Bundesliga game? “I’m sitting up in the stands. This gives me a better view of tactics. ”During the first half he was still editing scenes for the break address. On the way to the dressing room, he talks to Nagelsmann about which sequences should be shown to the players. Anyone who thinks that luck can put their feet up after a game is wrong. Review of the game and preparation for the next opponent are on the program. A top team like Leipzig often plays every three days, so there is hardly any time to take a deep breath.
It is all the better for luck when there is an international break. Not because he doesn’t like his job, on the contrary. But then he grabs his loved ones and drives the almost 500 kilometers to his home town of Ohlstadt. “My girlfriend and almost all of my friends come from Ohlstadt,” Glück explains the proximity to his hometown. Here he can switch off and likes to go into the mountains. What is currently only possible for a few days should become normal again at some point. “The goal is to move back to Ohlstadt at some point. I can’t say exactly when that will be. ”There are still tasks to be done with Leipzig beforehand. To continue to experience magical nights like the one in Lisbon, in which the boy from Boschet takes part in the concert of the greats.
