The Seychelles Tops Africa’s Most Powerful Passports in 2025, According to Henley & Partners
The Seychelles passport has once again claimed the title of Africa’s most powerful passport in 2025, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The island nation’s passport ranks 25th globally, granting its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to an impressive 156 destinations. This marks a slight improvement from its 2024 ranking, solidifying its position as a leader in african travel freedom.
Mauritius follows closely behind, securing the second spot in Africa and 29th globally, with access to 151 destinations. south Africa, which climbed five places this year, ranks third in Africa and 48th worldwide, offering visa-free entry to 106 countries. This progress has pushed three African nations into the global top 50, up from two in 2024.
The Henley Passport Index evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without prior visas, including visa-on-arrival, visitor permits, and electronic travel authorizations (eTA). The data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents over 250 airlines.
