Benin wants to generalize its health insurance project by January 2022

The Bnin sant 2021 opens Monday, November 9 at the Palais des congs de Cotonou, a meeting of health professionals with the aim of generalizing the health insurance project. Organized by the PSSP, the private health sector platform of Bnin, and the Bnin Sant + association, under the sponsorship of the ministers of health and social affairs, the meeting should decide on the contribution of the private sector to achieve universal coverage. Report in a health center.

Philom, a woman in her fifties, takes her biometric chart out of a small bag. She is one of those identified as beneficiaries of the state-funded health insurance system.

Philom explains that she has frequented this health center in Godomey for a long time, her children have been vaccinated here, and it is her uncle who informs her that she could benefit from free care, by showing her card.

Since August 15, 2019, the health centers in this health zone have been implementing this project, and the first targets are those people who do not have the means to treat themselves when they fall ill, explains Dr. Rodrigue Kohoun, coordinating physician of the Abomey Calavi SoAva sanitary zone. The government has decided to cover their health costs.

When a beneficiary arrives at the reception, the biometric card is inserted in a reader which allows it to be authenticated and to have free access, for a certain number of pathologies, as explained by Doctor Samuel Guido, general practitioner:

This is the case for the most common infections, such as malaria, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, but not all pathologies. Because chronic pathologies such as hypertension or diabetes are not covered.

From January 1, all citizens of Bnin will have to take out health insurance, which becomes compulsory. Because Universal Health Coverage (UHC), currently in the pilot phase, has a sustainable development objective, which should allow all geographic and financial access to health care.
