Benin Celebrities Awards Honors Eighteen Deserving Winners, Including Internationally Renowned Singer Cormélia

The fourth edition of the Benin Celebrities Awards recorded a total of eighteen winners, each more deserving than the other. Promoted by De Rosa Abakè Assongba and Chérita Walter, since its creation four years ago, this distinction has highlighted the great values of the artistic and cultural world of Benin.

This is how on Saturday February 10, 2024 at the Chapiteau in Cotonou, a beautiful group of artists were awarded the precious sesame. Through ”Benin Celebrities Awards” a range of artists found themselves in the spotlight with all the necessary tributes. Among them, the internationally renowned Beninese singer Cormélia. This great voice of Beninese music, who has already performed all over the world, is also honored by the Abakè’s foundation through a brilliant and luminous trophy. A symbolic way to say thank you to the star for everything she does for Benin through song.

“It was with great emotion that this event took place. This ceremony is a great moment of rejoicing for those responsible for the ABAKÈ’S Foundation and its artists who are honored. It was a source of pride because the guests were more at ease,” mentions the president of the ABAKE’S Foundation who adds that this 4th edition was better than the other three. For Chérita Walter, coordinator of the ABAKÈ’S Foundation, everything went as planned. “The 2025 edition will be perfect,” announces the foundation coordinator. It should be remembered that the objective of the ABAKÈ’S Foundation is to stand alongside former glories who do not have the chance to be prominent in their careers. This will encourage those who raise the image of Beninese culture.

Who is Cormélia and what is her track record?

Cormellia, songwriter, is originally from Benin. She has devoted herself to music since a young age. Her active generosity is her best way to help her human brothers and sisters, but her voice is her best way to praise God. She began to distinguish herself in the Adjogan choir and continued, upon her arrival in France, to seduce crowds during mass celebrations that she hosted. In France, she opened up to polyphony and gospel by actively participating in choirs. In 1999, she was one of the choristers who sang the “Macé requiem” at the Madeleine in Paris in support of the fight against cystic fibrosis. A resident of Cergy for several years, she has participated in several musical training courses in Cergy and Osny, traveling in France and abroad to Italy, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland. NY

She sings in the first manécanterie of Val d’Oise with varied repertoires: Renaissance songs, Misa Criola, sacred classical repertoire (Bach, Handel, Mozart, Verdi, Josquin Despres, Poulenc). In 2000, she founded the Gospel group from the town of Osny, whose repertoire includes Gospel classics, gospels coming directly from West Africa and gospels specially written and composed by Cormellia. The musicians who accompany the Gospel group (violin, accordion, keyboard, percussion, guitar) make it a unique formation in France.
