Rabat – Drinking water production at the Afourar treatment plant returned to normal on Tuesday evening, the National Office of Electricity and Water (ONEE) said.
“Following the rains that fell on the Beni Mellal region during the last week, the Bin El Ouidane dam, which constitutes the main source of the Afourar treatment plant, which supplies the city of Beni Mellal with drinking water, received a significant quantity of water reaching more than 10 million cubic meters,” recalls the Regional Directorate Center of ONEE (Water Department) in a press release.
This situation has led to an increase in the quantities of mud in the dam water, the filling rate of which is experiencing a sharp and exceptional drop, indicates the same source, noting that this situation has had an impact on the quality of the raw water and made it difficult to treat the water according to the required standards.
Consequently, ONEE services were forced to stop the water supply to the city of Beni Mellal from this station and to simply supply it from the Ain Asserdoune treatment plant and groundwater from the Sidi Jaber wells, which led to a temporary deficit in the drinking water supply of the city and surrounding regions of around 50%, the press release continued.
In this context, ONEE services have worked hard to get the station back into service as soon as possible, in coordination with all stakeholders, said the same source, noting that production at this station gradually resumed on the morning of Tuesday, September 3, with a return to normal on the evening of the same day.
To this end, ONEE ensures that its teams work continuously with all partners to ensure the supply of drinking water to the city of Béni Mellal and its regions in the best conditions.
