This Friday, Benfica won the women’s futsal Champions League (unofficial competition), beating Italians Bitonto C5 Femminile in a penalty shoot-out (5-4), after a 1-1 draw (1-1) during the regulatory period.
The Italian team took the lead after just 4 minutes of play, through Castagnaro, an advantage that, although short, served to lead them into the break. The equalizing goal came in the 30th minute, 10′ from the end, by Inês Fernandes.
On penalties, the Eagles were more effective (5-4), thus celebrating the club’s first European title in women’s futsal.
Meanwhile, Rui Costa has already congratulated the champions on their title: “I want to express my enormous pride to the women’s futsal team for winning the Women’s European Champions, which took place this week in Spain. As national champions, we once again represented Portugal in this prestigious European competition, achieving deserved success in the final. It is a more than fair reward for the work that has been carried out in recent years and which has now resulted in winning the most prestigious international title in the sport. We are European champions! The technical team, the athletes and the entire staff are to be congratulated for achieving the missing trophy at the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião. Thank you all!”, can be read in the message published by the Benfica president on the club’s website.
