Benfica Tops List for Most Revenue from Training Academy in Last Decade, Study Shows

Benfica is the club that managed to reap the most dividends from its training academy in the last ten years, according to a study presented by the Football Observatory (CIES), which compiles a list of 100 clubs, also featuring Sporting and FC Porto among the first 15 classified. . The Benfica Campus, in Seixal, earned the Luz club a total of 516 million euros in revenue, with 30 players sold in the last decade. Two-thirds of this revenue was obtained in the last five years alone.

The study only includes players who have spent at least three years at the club, between 15 and 21 years of age and, in this segment, Benfica has no rival, presenting values ​​far above the others, with more than 500 million revenues. More than half of this value, 335 million, was reached between 2019 and 2023 alone, after transfer market values ​​inflated significantly.

In second place is Ajax, a club from Amsterdam, also with a strong tradition in training, which, in the last ten years, accumulated 376 million euros in revenue from the sale of 36 players trained at the club. As with Benfica, a large part of the Dutch club’s revenue from the sale of players from its academy was generated in the last five years (66 percent, corresponding to 257 ME).

In third place on the podium are the French side Olympique Lyon, with 370 million euros in revenue, but unlike Benfica and Ajax, only half of this value, around 185 million, was obtained in the last five years in which the price of players increased clearly in the transfer market.

Sporting is also well ranked in this study with the Cristiano Ronaldo Academy appearing in the top ten, in seventh place, in the classification, with a total of 306 million in revenue generated in the last ten years, with the sale of 31 players. Unlike Seixal, most of the Alvalade club’s revenue was generated from 2014 to 2018 (189ME), having fallen in the last five years, from 2019 to 2023 (117ME).

FC Porto appears in 15th place in this study, with a total of 221 million euros added from the sale of 19 players. In this case, the dragons accumulated 91 million euros between 2014 and 2019, and another 130 in the last five years.

The top-ten of this study also includes three Premier League clubs, Chelsea (347ME), Tottenham (256ME) and Manchester City (254ME), in addition to the Spanish club Real Madrid and the French club Monaco (largely thanks to the sale of Kylian Mbappé to PSG) and also the Italians from Atalanta.

Outside of Europe, the academies with the highest income are Flamengo’s, with the Brazilian club standing out in 13th place, and River Plate’s, with the Argentine club’s formation appearing right after, in 14th place. post.
