Benfica and Sporting prevailed this Saturday in the first round of the Athletics Club Nationals, in Viana do Castelo, reinforcing the power manifested for 12 consecutive editions in the men’s and women’s sectors, respectively.
The superiority of the reds among men provided 84 points, 4 above Sporting and 36 more compared to Jardim da Serra, which was ranked second in women, with 53 points, against 52 from Estreito, both distant from the 87 of the lionesses, whose task is being, as in the last season, facilitated by the absence of the Luz club.
21 events in each gender filled a session in which no athlete joined the shot putter Auriol Dongmo and the 1,500 meters sprinter Isaac Nader in the list of Portuguese athletes with a qualification mark for the Paris’2024 Olympic Games.
The two rivals from Lisbon were almost always in the top two positions in the men’s events, with the exception of the 100 metres, in which Delvis Santos, from Jardim da Serra, was superior by centimeters to André Prazeres, from Benfica, using the ‘photofinish’.
That competition was won by the Cameroonian Emmanuel Alobwede, after 9.98 seconds, and helped Sporting to lessen the impact on the standings caused by the greater number of triumphs achieved by the reds – eight against three -, with each one worth eight points.
The lions also celebrated through the Ukrainian weight thrower Roman Kokoshko (20.33 meters), bronze medalist at the 2023 European indoor track, and João Vieira, now holder of the best mark of the season in the 5,000 march (19:58.44 minutes).
Benfica’s best consistency came in the 4×100 meters relay (39.97 seconds), decided in the ‘photofinish’, and in the victories of Isaac Nader, specialist in the 1,500 meters (3.59.20 minutes), Samuel Barata, imposing from early on in the 5,000 meters (13.46.84), and the Nigerian Emmanuel Bamidele, faster than the Portuguese record holder João Coelho in the 400 meters (46.3 0).
If Ivo Tavares and Pedro Buaró won the long jump and pole jump contests, reaching 7.56 and 5.20 meters, respectively, Leandro Ramos, who has the most in Portugal in the javelin, matched the favoritism with 72.46 and Décio Andrade, holder of the best mark of the year in the hammer, set the personal record at 72.81 meters.
The women’s sector was less level, with Sporting winning 10 out of a possible 11, leaving only the triple jump to Lucinda Gomes, from Estreito, with 13.09 meters.
One day after renewing her contract with the lionesses, the European and world indoor champion Auriol Dongmo made her second best record in the season outdoors, with 19.70 meters in the shot put, while Anabela Neto did not exceed 1.71 in the high jump and Márcia Maketa, 17, improved her personal mark on the hammer to 56.79.
Other successes for Sporting were produced by Cátia Azevedo, Portugal’s record holder in the 400 meters (52.98 seconds), Salomé Afonso, in the 1,500 (4.24.09 minutes), Laura Taborda, in the 3,000 hurdles (10.05.08), Carolina Costa, in the 3,000 march (13.25.17), Catarina Ribeiro, in the 5,000 (16.23.10), or Lorène Bazolo, who added the second best mark of the national season in the 100 (11.22) to the collective success in the 4×100 relay (45.10).
As for the other categories, Atletismo de Seia and Água de Pena will enter the decisive round at the head of the men’s and women’s classifications of the II Division, while Ilha Azul, in men, and Casa do Benfica de Faro, in women, lead the third level.
The 85th edition of the Nacional of athletics clubs will feature 48 teams from 31 emblems across three divisions, with a total of nearly 1,000 athletes, and takes place over the weekend between the Manuela Machado Municipal Stadium and Jardim da Marina, in Viana do Castelo.
