Benefits of a Low Salt Diet Apart from Preventing Degenerative Diseases

CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta – Do you know that the role of sodium from salt is actually really needed by the body as an essential nutrient for various physiological mechanisms such as ensuring the balance of body fluids and also playing a role in regulating muscle and nerve function. However, if consumed in excess can lead to various degenerative diseases such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, and others. Therefore need a low salt diet.

This was conveyed by the Product and Nutrition Manager, PR Department of PT Ajinomoto Indonesia, Katarina Larasati, when delivering Salt Salt material to residents of Hamlet Gayam, Mojokerto, Thursday, 9 February 2023.

“So far there are four basic tastes that we are more familiar with, namely sweet, salty, bitter, sour. Now the last thing to be discovered is umami or savory taste, discovered by a scientist from Japan, namely Dr. Kikunae Ikeda. We can distinguish chicken broth which tastes more savory and delicious with a little MSG added, compared to chicken broth with salt which only tastes salty,” said Katarina.

According to WHO, the recommended daily safe consumption of salt is less than five grams. “Well, the Wise Salt campaign from Ajinomoto invites Indonesian families to live healthier by reducing their intake or use of salt in preparing food, but can still get a high taste, by adding a little MSG. You do this by replacing 2 teaspoons of salt with 1 teaspoon salt tea plus half MSG in cooked food,” said Katarina especially for the mothers who were present.

According to Katarina, the fact is that using MSG can be a strategy for a low-salt diet. This is because the sodium content in MSG is only one-third of the sodium content in ordinary table salt. Another thing that was also discussed in the session was the safety aspect of MSG.

As a solution to reducing salt, MSG has so far been declared safe by the National Health Agency (BPOM) and the world, for consumption with daily intake limits: In moderation. The negative issues that have been associated with MSG are myths that have not been scientifically proven to be related.

It is important to prevent degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension by taking into account recommendations from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) regarding limiting intake of sugar, salt and fat (GGL). Therefore, tips on cooking creations that use salt wisely are needed.

Katarina added that currently her party is intensifying the Wise Salt campaign which is in line with the recommendations of the Indonesian Ministry of Health regarding reducing intake of Sugar, Salt, Fat (GGL) in daily consumption.
