A tour and exchange of experiences in different types of crops, was carried out through an Agroecological Route organized by Minera El Abra for the beneficiary farmers with the first Agricultural Fund for Rural Development delivered by the company.
The instance allowed guided visits by professionals from the area in San Pedro de Atacama and Toconao, where about 30 beneficiaries of the fund learned about the production of traditional crops and other more modern ones, they visited nurseries and seed banks. In addition, they reviewed various solutions to the problems presented by agricultural production and the alternatives in terms of soil fertilization techniques. This last exhibition was led by the agronomist of Fundación La Semilla, Sigisfredo Marchant.
“The objective of this was for farmers to see that there are real agroecological solutions to their agricultural problems. There are many questions, questions and problems that the farmers themselves want to solve, so I think it was a good opportunity for them to see that there are ways to solve their concerns in a good way by buying the minimum of inputs”, explained Marchant.
Ximena Anza Colamar, one of the visiting farmers from the Caspana community, pointed out that “I want to thank Minera El Abra for its commitment to the indigenous communities and also Fundación La Semilla, which is making us the link to be able to execute these projects. They have helped us in the development that we have, especially the agricultural and livestock people, which is my case. My business form is compost, not with so much process, and it is what I market and this tour helped me to see the processes that I can add to my product”.
In the case of Roberto Mondaca from the Turi community, he pointed out that the visit served “to exchange ideas with other farmers in the Alto El Loa area, with the San Pedro area, especially with people who are living new experiences and who we have not taken advantage of ignorance. I want to thank El Abra because it gives us the chance to learn and translate this knowledge into our lands and lands”.
