British actor Benedict Cumberbatch received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, a few weeks before the Oscar gala in which he will know if he wins his first statuette.
At the ceremony held in the heart of the movie mecca, the protagonist of “The power of the dog” received praise from the head of Marvel studios, Kevin Feige, and JJ Abrams, who directed installments of “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”
“It’s an extraordinary honor,” said Cumberbatch, 46, who stars in the upcoming Marvel movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
The actor expressed mixed feelings at the event attended by his followers. “I’m British, so part of me sees this as a difficult experience,” he said. “The other part of me is quite enjoying this huge ego boost.”
In his speech, Cumberbatch spoke about climate change, the pain that the covid-19 pandemic caused people, and also referred to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling for action to stop this attack.
“We cannot be left behind. (…) We need to act,” he said.
“Support human rights organizations, pressure your politicians, the bank, the industries, to find something they can do to help,” he urged.
Cumberbatch achieved worldwide fame with the BBC series “Sherlock”. This year he was nominated for best actor by the Academy thanks to his portrayal of Phil Burbank, the grim cowboy in the Western “The Power of the Dog” directed by Jane Campion.
Available on Netflix, the drama about toxic masculinity in the American West in the 1920s earned 12 Oscar nominations, including Cumberbatch’s.
The actor is measured with the Spanish Javier Bardem, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith and Denzel Washington.
The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27 in Los Angeles.
