Bence Imre is currently under contract with Hungarian European Cup participant FTC-Green Collect. He was born in Budapest. The 1.85 meter tall right winger’s parents are legends in their sports.
Celebrity parents
Mother Beatrix Kökény was a key player in the Hungarian national handball team, which consistently finished in the top five at the Olympics, World Championships and European Championships between 1996 and 2000. His father, Géza Imre, is a four-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion and six-time European fencing champion.
“When I was younger, it was difficult to deal with situations because my parents had already achieved almost everything. But I remember at the age of seven or eight I understood that I had to work harder not to “To be just her son, but Bence Imre,” the 21-year-old says on the EHF-Homepage quoted.
Bence Imre may have chosen handball, but he has tried many different team and individual sports – and he still follows many of them, especially basketball. He thinks his personality would be similar to his father’s: conscious, calm and prepared for any mind games the opponents might try.
When it comes to handball, his father is more reserved. “My mother understandably has more opinions about the game itself, as she was a playmaker and was always vocal on the pitch,” explains Bence Imre.
“But over the years we have both learned how to deal with it and how to communicate. During the European Championships, they mostly asked me how I slept or ate. In the end, they are still my parents,” he says Right winger.
Separated from his parents, Bence Imre wants to go his own way and be recognized for his own achievements. In his private life and on the field, he doesn’t let negative things discourage him and gets over things quickly, says Imre.
Role models: Abalo and Federer
He cites Luc Abalo and the Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer as role models. The former world-class right winger from France inspires him because Abalo’s style is “unique and he has renewed the wing position in handball, not to mention that I am interested in fashion just like him.”
“I had the pleasure of watching him play and I’m very jealous of his jumping ability,” Imre told the EHF press service. What impressed me about Federer was how he mentally dealt with difficult situations and cared for his body.
“I’m a little thinner than average, but that’s my advantage because I can stay fast. There’s still room for speed in defense and I always play with enough concentration, which requires constant mental and emotional preparation. It’s similar like in fencing: one mistake and the game is over,” describes Bence Imre.
Strong EM
At the European Championships in Germany, Imre gave his first international taste of his skills: he scored 15 goals in the first four games – with a 100 percent hit rate. “I’m sure no one prepared for me at the EURO, but I hope that has changed.” In total he scored 20 goals – from 25 attempts. Imre was surprisingly not only missing from the final all-star team of the European Championship, but also from the shortlist.
Clear targets
The 21-year-old has clear goals: “I want to win a medal with the national team and play abroad. In Hungary I can’t imagine playing for another club. And my private life? I haven’t dreamed of that yet. I’m fine it’s just about handball.”
