New York, Aug 28 (EFE).- Roberto Bautista was eliminated from the US Open on Wednesday after losing in the second round to American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes.
The tennis player from Castellón, number 67 in the world, had no advantage against a superior rival, number 13 in the ranking.
Against Shelton, Bautista only conceded three serves in the entire match, one per set, but was unable to get a single break.
The three sets were practically identical, with a break at the end of each set that allowed the American to advance to the next round with effort but without suffering.
In the first set the break came in the eighth game, in the second in the seventh game and in the final set in the ninth serve.
Baustista, who had eliminated Italian Luca Nardi in the first round, was making his eleventh appearance at the US Grand Slam this year.
His best results were in the 2014 and 2015 editions, when he was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, respectively.
With Bautista’s defeat, the only Spanish tennis player still in the New York tournament is Carlos Alcaraz, who will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, world number 74, in the second round on Thursday.
The US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year, began on Monday and will be played until Sunday, September 8 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the Big Apple.
