If the name Ben Affleck falls, I would argue that this mostly only happens in connection with negative headlines or his acting roles. His behind-the-scenes work as a director and screenwriter is phenomenal. He was the youngest writer ever to win an Oscar for “Good Will Hunting“ retracted. Also his subsequent worksGone Baby Gone – No child’s play” and “Argo‘ became favorites of critics. That’s probably why rumors persist that Affleck has a “Batman‘ movie – especially now that James Gunn has taken over the DCU.
The actor and filmmaker should now be able to do this in an interview The Hollywood Reporter finally shattered. In fact, these rumors are no coincidence, as Affleck revealed. He actually wanted to make a film about the bat, only “Justice League‘ was to blame for the fact that his interest ultimately evaporated:
“Say What You Want is my highest rated career film. I’ve never had one that went from nadir to summit. In retrospect, it’s a hit. Suddenly I was congratulated for the bomb I participated in. I also wanted to direct a Batman, but I shyed away: ‘I’m out. I never want to do that again. I’m not fit for it.’ This was the worst experience I have ever had in a store that is full of crappy experiences. It broke my heart.”
This opinion has also changed with the DCU takeover of James Gunn unfortunately nothing changed:
“I wouldn’t direct James Gunn’s DCU. No way. I have nothing against James Gunn. He’s a nice guy and I’m sure he’ll do a great job. I just don’t want to go in that direction and direct like they do. I’m not interested.”
Ben Affleck’s “Batman” career is probably shelved once and for all. The last time we see him as the Dark Knight (and only for about five minutes) is in the upcoming “The Flash“.
