‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ has been off the air for four months after the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May after failing to reach an agreement with Hollywood studios and several streaming networks on improved wages and residual payments and a new regulation on the use of artificial intelligence.
Now the presenter of the popular ‘late night’ has revealed that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon offered to cover the salaries of the workers of the program, which have been frozen during the hiatus that the actors joined last July.
“Ben Affleck and the despicable Matt Damon contacted me and offered to pay our staff for two weeks, one week each. They wanted to pay them out of their own pocket. Our staff,” Kimmel explained during an appearance on his new ‘Strike Force Five’ podcast that he has created with Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and John Olive. This project has been launched precisely to allocate all the funds they collect to the professionals who have joined the strike.
However, Jimmy turned down the offer as he felt it was not the responsibility of the two Hollywood stars to support their employees. Ryan Reynolds has also helped the program’s staff by giving them a year of free service with the cell phone company he owns, Mint Mobile.
“I don’t know the details, but that’s the headline,” Kimmel added.
Matt Damon has become one of the best ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ gags. It all began during the third season, while the presenter closed a program that had been especially disappointing because the guests had not been up to the task and the night had seemed eternal. At the last moment, without it being written into the script, Kimmel came up with an apology to the famous actor -who was completely out of his ‘late night’ league at the time- for not having had time to interview him and thus one of the longest-running pranks on American television was born.
The aforementioned was amused and lent himself to the game. The two started a fake confrontation involving Ben Affleck, Damon’s best friend and collaborator, and even comedian Sarah Silverman when she broke off her relationship with Kimmel. Since then, their ‘enmity’ has leaked into Kimmel’s monologue when he first presented the Oscars and at the Emmys, where Damon trolled him masterfully. Unlike Ricky Gervais, who made half of Hollywood tremble with his scathing comments every time he took the lead at the Golden Globes, his sense of humor is just what the movie mecca likes: harmless and no collateral damage.
