BEM UI evaluates the running of the Jokowi-Ma’ruf government for the past two years. There are many areas that they highlight, including the revised KPK Law, freedom of expression cases, revisions to the ITE Law, the environment, food estate issues, dirty coal energy, the climate crisis, human rights violations, to education issues. Here is the insistence of BEM UI.
Responding to the problems in these various sectors, the UI BEM Alliance stated its position, namely to urge Jokowi-Ma’ruf to:
1. Cancel all efforts to weaken corruption eradication by issuing the KPK Perppu and cancel the implications of the revision of the KPK Law, such as the results of the National Insight Test (TWK) and the issuance of the BLBI Investigation Termination Order (SP3). Removing the Chair of the KPK, Firli Bahuri and all ranks of the KPK leadership for the 2019-2023 period from their positions due to the setback in eradicating corruption in Indonesia.
2. Ensure that everyone is free to express opinions both in public and through electronic media by revising problematic articles of the ITE Law. Removing the Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly and the Minister Coordinator for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD from his position for his failure to provide legal guarantees and protection for the right to freedom of expression and opinion as well as in resolving cases past human rights violations.
3. Urge to accelerate the transformation and reform of the Indonesian National Police to ensure the guarantee of the right to freedom of expression and opinion for everyone
4. Increase Indonesia’s NDC target according to the Paris Agreement, target Indonesia to have zero emissions by 2045, implement court orders related to air pollution, stop food estate projects that exacerbate deforestation, and declare a climate emergency. Removing the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar from her position on the grounds of environmental degradation and the reality of weakening environmental protection.
5. Issuing a Perppu to revoke the revision of the Minerba Law and the Job Creation Law and its derivative regulations, stop national strategic projects that damage the environment and rob citizens of their rights, and increase the use of clean renewable energy by reducing the use of dirty coal energy. Evaluating the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan regarding his performance in coordinating the ministries under him to carry out sustainable development that is environmentally sound.
6. Resolve past human rights violations and try the perpetrators through a human rights court in a fair and transparent manner. Removing Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin from his position on the grounds of his failure to resolve cases of past human rights violations.
7. Ensuring the creation of academic freedom within the campus and ensuring that no more students and lecturers are sanctioned by the campus for conveying their analysis, opinions and aspirations. Removing Nadiem Makarim as Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for failing to guarantee academic freedom in the campus environment.
8. Improve the health system to prepare for the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and evaluate the Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin regarding his performance in handling the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia.
