Samsung has already clearly hinted at it in recent weeks: the successors of the previous generation Flip and Fold phones were in the pipeline. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 in Galaxy Fold4 were unveiled at the most recent Galaxy Unpacked event.
During the well-known Unpacked livestream, Samsung extensively showcased both new phones. The foldable phones should keep the good of their predecessors and improve on previous criticisms. The community members can experience for themselves whether this has actually been achieved. Together with Belsimpel, Tweakers Partners is organizing a test panel around the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4. The good thing is that the two lucky ones who will each test one of the new phones get to keep that device. So sign up in the poll at the bottom of this article.
Specifications Galaxy Z Flip4
The Galaxy Z Flip seems to be primarily a smartphone for younger ‘creators’, but its compact, portable size also appeals to consumers. That is still the case with the Flip4, although the new model has become a few grams heavier: instead of 183 it now weighs 187 grams, and at the same time it is slightly smaller.
The screen and the cameras have remained the same. The Z Flip4 is equipped with a 6.7-inch Dynamic Full HD+ amoled screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2640×1080. The second screen, on the outside, has a 1.9-inch diagonal and a resolution of 260×512 pixels. . The link with taking and sharing photos and short films predominates. Through a partnership with Meta, Flip4’s FlexCam is optimized for the most popular social media platforms, such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. From the cover screen, users can take selfies directly with Quick Shot. Samsung claims that photos and videos are sharper and more stable, thanks to the improved camera with a sensor that produces 65 percent brighter images and is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is equipped with two 12-megapixel cameras: a 12-megapixel main camera combined with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera. On the front of the new phone is a 10-megapixel selfie camera. The battery has been improved: from 3300mAh/15W to 3700mAh/25W.
Specifications Galaxy Z Fold4
The big eye-catcher of the previous Fold models was the large screen, and that is also the case now. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is equipped with a slightly shorter and slightly wider screen than its predecessor, so that the screen on the outside comes out at 23.1:9 instead of 24.5:9 and has a resolution of 2262×882 pixels. The screen on the inside is also slightly wider; it comes out 0.3cm wider and thus becomes slightly less square. The diagonal remains rounded at 7.6 inches. The edges around both screens have been made a fraction thinner.
The biggest plus is arguably the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 under the hood. The Fold4 has just as much RAM and storage space as the Fold3, but a copy will also be available with 1TB storage space. Samsung promises that the new processor is faster and more economical, and that the battery should last a lot longer.
The Z Fold4’s wide-angle camera has been greatly improved: it now offers 50 megapixels, which is a big step forward compared to the 12 megapixels of the Fold3. In addition, you can zoom in up to 30x with the Space Zoom lens. The triple camera on the back also consists of a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera and a 10-megapixel phone camera with 3x optical zoom. The front camera still has 10 megapixels. With the various camera modes, including the larger zoom map in capture view mode, the dual preview and rear cam selfie the Fold4 must be able to meet all camera needs.
Multitasking, durable and sturdier
With already the fourth iteration of both the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Fold, it seems difficult to make revolutionary changes. At first glance you hardly notice any difference with the two foldables from last year. If you look more closely, you will notice that a lot has changed. For example, Samsung has equipped the two smartphones with Android 12L with OneUI 4.1. This software has a few new features, the most notable of which is the taskbar. This bar is permanently on view and makes the operating system look more like a desktop system. All apps on this bar remain open in the background, making switching between apps very fast. It is also possible with this version to keep different apps open side by side. On the Z Flip4, that is a maximum of two apps; on the Z Fold4 you can keep up to three apps open at the same time.
In any case, they are the most sturdy and durable models so far. With armor aluminum frames, hinge cover and exclusive Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the cover screen and back glass, the Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 are the strongest foldable devices Samsung has ever made. The durability of the main display has also been improved by an optimized layered structure, which limits damage from external shocks, according to Samsung. Both the Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 are IPX8 water resistant, so you have less to worry about if it rains.
Samsung has also reduced the packaging volume for the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 by 52.8% and 58.2%, respectively, compared to the first-generation Galaxy Foldables. In addition, it uses 100% recycled paper for the boxes.
