Damien Peart, a much-loved man known to neighbors as “Santa Claus,” died in an apartment building fire in New Rochelle (NY).
Peart, 45, was found alive but unconscious during a search of his 3rd floor apartment on 5th Avenue shortly after 3:30 a.m. Friday. In spite of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CRP) He was pronounced dead at the hospital, he said. ABC News.

Several other residents were found by firefighters in the lobby and checked, but all appeared to be okay. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes and was mostly confined to the victim’s apartment.
A couple more apartments suffered minor water and smoke damage, but most residents were able to return to their homes. No firefighters were injured and The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
New Rochelle Fire Chief Andrew Sandor said he believes this was the first fatal fire in the city since a large four-alarm fire claimed the life of a woman in April 2022.
Residents knew Peart as “Santa Claus” because He often wore a Santa hat while biking around the apartment building complex, even in the summer. “He was the character of the neighborhood. Everybody knew him,” said resident Robin Yvonne.
Two days later, a 67-year-old man was killed and three other people were injured, including an infant, in a public housing (NYCHA) apartment fire in Brooklyn.
In a similar tragedy, last week a woman tragically died at age 86 when a fire devastated her home in Queens (NYC) and also left three injured.
