Martijn and Margarita from Amsterdam have had a sad weekend. On Friday afternoon, their beloved lovebird couple Willy and Max escaped from their cage with a lot of noise. The birds circled around the house on the Amsteldijk for a while, but then flew away.
The colorful couple is of course named after King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. “At first we didn’t know who the female was and who the male was. Turns out we were wrong. Now the male is called Max and the female is Willy,” laughs Martijn.
The funny birds are currently more likely to bring a tear than a smile, because they have been gone for three days. “We think they opened the cage themselves,” says Martijn. “We were in the kitchen ourselves and heard a lot of noise. The window was open, so they flew out.” According to him, the couple was ‘so excited about being outside’ that they didn’t respond to anything afterwards.
The couple hopes that has now changed. “In the wild they can’t find food, so at some point they will go to people, because they associate people with food anyway,” says Martijn. He hopes that someone will manage to catch the two. The chances of them returning home are small, because they don’t know what it looks like from the outside.
Bird Sounds
One of the two birds has been spotted near the senior citizen complex Het Amstelhuis. A woman saw the colorful bird flying there and reported to Martijn and Margarita because she had seen posters with the birds hanging on them. Whether the feathered couple is still together is not clear.
