“We are a bit sad to see him go as we were used to him coming to visit our giraffe. But we are also very happy because the animal was in captivity and it shouldn’t be like that. The weather and living conditions here are not suitable for him,” says local resident Flora Ortega.
The timing of the move turned out to be really important, as it turns out that cold fronts are approaching the region and giraffes are not the kind of animals that are immune to the cold.
The roughly 50-hour journey brought Benito to his new home at a safari park in Puebla, southern Mexico.
Benito measured the road in a specially designed trailer that is more than five meters high and adapted for comfort and safety.

Inside the container, the animal was accompanied by various treats and customized conditions, such as temperature controls and speakers, which allowed technical staff to monitor Benito and communicate with him throughout the journey.
In its previous residence, the giraffe was exposed to extreme temperatures and various natural elements. At the new shelter in Puebla, Benito promises a more natural environment, more reminiscent of the vast landscapes of the African savannah.
