It’s a shock for fans of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”: Andre Braugher, who starred as district boss Captain Raymond Holt on the internationally successful comedy for eight seasons, has died at the age of 61. The actor, who also became known for a leading role in the crime drama “Homicide,” died after a short, serious illness, his agent announced. Braugher is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ami Brabson, and three children.
Andre Keith Braugher was the youngest of four children and grew up in Chicago. He initially aspired to a career in medicine, but during his studies he discovered his love for acting. During his early years as an actor in New York, he frequently appeared in Shakespeare plays in Central Park.
Andre Braugher played a police officer in his first permanent television role. He appeared as Detective Winston Blake in the television film sequels to “Kojak” in 1989 and 1990. In 1993, Braugher landed a leading role that made him internationally known: that of interrogation specialist Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Braugher appeared on the award-winning crime drama for six seasons and also played the role in a crossover episode of “Law & Order.” He was ultimately awarded an Emmy for his performance. Another followed years later for the FX miniseries “Thief – The Million Job”.
Andre Braugher finally came close to a career as a doctor, with a permanent role as Dr. Ben Gideon in the short-lived hospital drama “Gideon’s Crossing,” which lasted for one season on ABC starting in 2000. He then returned to his police career. In the crime series “Hack – The Streets of Philadelphia” he played Marcus Wellington for two seasons, who repeatedly supports an ex-colleague and thus risks his career.
Over the next few years, Braugher took on recurring roles in well-known series such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, “Dr. House” and “Andromeda – Deadly Dust from Space” before appearing in the comedy “Men of a Certain Age”. on the site of Ray Romano and Scott Bakula.
